A Waterford resident was duped out of $3,400 in the latest Canada Revenue Agency scam.
WATERFORD - A Waterford resident is out $3,400 after being targeted by another scam.
On Friday police received a call from a citizen who said they had become the victim of fraud. The citizen was called by an unknown man claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency. The caller said the resident was the target of a criminal investigation for outstanding taxes. The victim was then told to go to the bank, withdraw the money and then go to a local store to buy iTunes gift cards.
Once the victim bought the cards, the activation codes were given to the scammer.
A second call was made by the same unknown man who told the victim to purchase another $6,000 in ITunes cards. It was at this point the victim began to think this was a scam.
Police are once again warning the public to be suspicious of any unsolicited calls.
The OPP have put out these tips to help people spot a scam:
The Canada Revenue Agency does not do the following:
The CRA will not request personal information of any kind from a taxpayer by email.
The CRA will not divulge taxpayer information to another person unless formal authorization is provided by the taxpayer.
The CRA will not leave any personal information or threatening messages on an answering machine.
When in doubt, ask yourself the following:
Am I expecting any calls from the CRA?
Does this sound too good to be true?
Is the caller able to identify themselves with an ID number that you can verify?
Is the requester asking for information I would not include with my tax return?
Is the requester asking for information I know the CRA already has on file for me?
