Woodstock Police are offering up a few tips to parents today for Safer Internet Day.
WOODSTOCK - Today is Safer Internet Day.
Woodstock Police is offering up the following tips to make sure you keep yourself and your kids safe online.
Tips for personal safety:
- Make your passwords long and strong (combine capital/lowercase letters, numbers & symbols)
- Keep your passwords different and change them often! Once someone has gained access to one account they could easily access your other accounts if your passwords are the same.
- Turn off location features – LOTS of apps and websites use location features that allow strangers to locate exactly where you are.
- Cover device camera lenses when not using them, so even if someone gains access to your device camera, they cannot watch you through it without your knowledge.
- Set your social media accounts to private so you can choose who is able to view your posts
- Do not post about travel until you have returned home – empty houses are often targeted for break ins and robberies.
Tips for parents:
- Regularly monitor your kids internet and social media use to keep them accountable – sit down with your kids regularly to review their recent internet use
- Continue to educate yourself on what apps and websites your kids are using and how to stay safe while using them
- Set time limits on device use
- Keep their devices out of their bedrooms – set the rule that phones and devices stay on the kitchen counter overnight and stay out of bedrooms in general
- The Zoe & Molly Online website from the Canadian Centre for Child Protection Inc. is an excellent resource with comics and games to teach children about internet safety visit www.zoeandmolly.ca
