Ryan's Law has passed third reading in the legislature and was given royal ascent to officially become a law in Ontario. Elgin Middlesex London MPP Jeff Yurek has been advocating for Ryans Law over the past two years. He wanted to make a change after 12 year old Ryan Gibbons, died after a severe asthma attack during recess at his school in St. Thomas. The Thames Valley District school Board policy at the time was that medication must be kept in the principal's office and they couldn't get his inhaler in time to save Ryan's life. Yurek says the main point of the law is to ensure all students with asthma are able to keep their relief medication inhaler with them at all times while they are at school as long as they have their parents permission. He adds the law also states that school's must be asthma friendly and have education programs for teachers, staff and students.
Ryan's Law passed with all three parties support.
