The Oxford County Injury Prevention team will be educating young people about the dangers of distracted driving.

Students could come face to face with police as they conduct the Put Down the Phone Campaign.

Members of the Oxford County Injury Prevention Team will be at schools to spread the word about distracted driving according to Registered Nurse Britney MacKay.

"The prevalence of distracted driving has increased - collisions associated with distracted driving have doubled since 2000. One of the captions for the distracted driving campaign is that if you aren't focused on the road, things can happen very fast."

Along with the possible deadly consequences of distracted driving, MacKay says they will also be educating new drivers on the stiffer punishments G1 and G2 drivers could face.

"You still get the fine of the $490 but instead of getting the demerit points, you actually lose your licence for 30 days. And then the second time you're convicted it's for 90 days. And if you're convicted a third time they actually cancel your licence and you are removed from the graduated licensing system."

During this campaign officers will stop kids driving near schools to have a quick chat about distracted driving and hand out some goodies.
