Oxford's MPP launches petition against a possible 10% hike in the gas tax.
Could you afford an extra $260 in gas taxes per year?
That's an estimate being floated by the Ontario PC's, as they wage a campaign against a possible hike in the gas tax. One of the "revenue tools" being suggested to fund public transit improvements in the GTA is a 10% hike in the gas tax.
Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman believes that could be included in the Liberals' spring budget. "In the latest report, which the Premier says she supports and will deal with in her budget is an increase in gas taxes to help pay for Toronto transit. I just don't believe it's appropriate that the good folks from Oxford should be held to account for the lack of spending on transit in Toronto over the past number of years."
Hardeman has launched a petition against such an increase, and he believes local residents will sign it. "I think I could without hesitation say the majority of people in Oxford are definitely opposed to increasing the gas tax to build Toronto transit. But I think it's a good idea to get that message directly from them and bring it to Queen's Park."
You can click here to fill out the on-line petition, or visit Hardeman's Woodstock office at 12 Perry St. to sign it in person.
