Healthy Communities Oxford want your feedback and input on a Food Security report for the county. The group, along with Public Health are hosting a public Food Security workshop at the Elm Hurst Inn Tuesday from 6 - 8 pm. They are encouraging residents to come out and voice their concerns or share suggestions on improving food insecurity locally. According to Public Health's Manager of Health Promotions, Susan MacIsaac, surveys from 2012 indicate 9.3% of residents feel food insecure, up 4.6% from 2011. With funds received from the Ontario government, through Oxford County Public Health, the group have hired a consultant and are hosting the workshops to create a Food Security plan to address the issue. MacIsaac says the public's input will be key for their final report. "All the information that we receive from all the workshops will be put together in a report by our consultant and will identify the different priorities that were raised at each of these opportunities. And they will be presenting that report to council and the local community once that report is completed". MacIsaac noted that the resident's comments are crucial in developing Food Security. "We really value the feedback from Oxford County residents and where they feel the needs are and they know best about what's happening in their community so that's been very helpful". The workshop at the Elm Hurst Inn tonight will feature individual focus groups, a keynote speaker who is the coordinator of the "Mustard Seed" in Hamilton as well as the opportunity for residents to bring their concerns, questions or ideas forward. The idea of Food Security is to ensure accessible, affordable nutrition for everyone in Oxford County.
