The OPP are reminding everyone to shred sensitive documents and keep an eye on bank accounts to protect yourself from identity theft.
OXFORD COUNTY - OPP are reminding residents how to protect themselves from identity theft.
Constable Lisa Narancsik explains the process if you have your identity stolen: "The first thing that you need to do is start in on your credit, so you will probably want to do a check with all of your credit card companies and your banks. The other thing that you probably would like to do is a notification to Revenue Canada - with identity theft it could include the theft of a Social Insurance Number and you need to notify anything that is related to you financially." Another tip to protect yourself is to keep your pin number confidential and not let anyone watch you enter in into a machine.
Constable Narancsik spoke to Heart FM about the many ways people can get their hands on sensitive information. "If you don't shred your bills or statements that you receive, if people get your credit information or gotten pin numbers. You just have to be very careful when you are out making purchases, paying bills."
Constable Narancsik discusses what do when creditors begin to call if your identity has been stolen. "Don't be afraid to speak to creditors; if you don't owe money they will work with you so that is the first place. If someone is phoning saying you owe a lot of money, they can also provide you the information as to where the debt was incurred. We work hard for everything that we have so make sure you are protecting yourselves, especially over the holidays when you are making your purchases."
