The Founder of Troy's Run Foundation is encouraging everyone to keep yourself safe and always wear a helmet.
As kids rush out the door to play pond hockey this winter, make sure they don't forget their helmet.
That's the message from the founder and President of Troy's Run, Troy Adams. Adams suffered a severe brain injury after a car accident when he was a teenager and it took him over 8 years to recover. He started his foundation to get people talking about brain injuries and what impact it can have on your life. Adams tells Heart FM why it makes him cringe when he sees kids playing hockey without a helmet.
"I deal with people who suffer from brain injury - traumatic brain injury at that - where it can turn your life around. A lot of the people that we deal with at Troy's Run Foundation are individuals who have slipped and fallen on the ice. Some people have been crashed into on the ice, some have been at public rinks, backyard rinks, and on local ponds. I think it starts with the parents and adults who need to set the example by also wearing a helmet on the ice. You may be the best skater in the world and the most confident, but you can't stop that person from losing an edge and sliding beneath you and you are going to fall backwards and hit your head. Problem is it is going to take awhile for EMS to get there and while you're waiting for EMS your brain is bleeding inside your skull and then you have irreparable damage."
Adams says the best advice he can give to parents is to lead by example and wear a helmet when your playing with your kids. Troy's Run is a grassroots organization that is run by volunteers and 100 percent of the donations are put back into the communities right across Canada. You can learn more about Troy's Run here.
