The Woodstock Farmer's Market is encouraging locals to donate fresh food to the Salvation Army today
WOODSTOCK - As Local Food Week whines down the Woodstock Farmer's Market has a plan to ensure everyone has access to fresh food.
Manager for the Woodstock Farmer's Market Patrick McMahon says in the past they have given out gifts to customers at the Market but this year they decided to give to those who can't afford fresh produce.
"I got together with the vendor team and got a commitment that they are all going to give a big donation and they are going to have signs on all of their booths that are encouraging customers to purchase a bag of local produce and donate that to the Salvation Army and the Salvation Army is going to be there with a table collecting the goods and taking them home at the end of the day."
McMahon says he is very passionate about fresh, local food.
"Just because you can't afford to buy it doesn't mean you shouldn't be eating it. It's the healthiest, it's the best thing for you, it's the best thing for your kids and I'm sure the people who can't afford to buy food still want to feed their family the best possible meal so I would like to start some sort of a tradition or a trend so that instead of wasting food at the end of the day, we keep it, collect it and donate it to the less fortunate."
McMahon says his goal is to collect 500 pounds of food.
"I think that's easily attainable just with my vendor team but it would be great if we could put together 500 pounds of fresh produce to give to the food bank. My only concern is they may have trouble distributing it but we might then have to work with some of the other local charitable groups that do food programs."
The Farmer's Market is open Saturdays from 7am until noon at the Woodstock Fairgrounds.
