ST. THOMAS - Southwestern Public Health has been notified that a member of the St. Thomas Community Christian School community in St. Thomas, is a probable case of COVID-19.
This is the first probable case at a school in Southwestern Health Unit. Following notification, public health staff immediately initiated a case investigation to identify the source of transmission and the individual's close contacts.
The broader school community was informed of the positive case by email from school principal Jason Schouten and provided with instructions about next steps. Close contacts will be notified of their potential exposure by public health officials.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock says Public health is currently in the process of issuing those notifications.
"School administrators and our public health team are working in partnership to ensure everyone is informed and knows what to do next so that the risk of the virus spreading further is minimized."
Shouten adds that their commitment is to keeping the school community safe."
We're following public health recommendations, working closely with our public health school nurse and making sure everyone is well supported and well informed throughout this process."
Public health will not release the identity of the case or whether it is a student, or employee, to protect the privacy of the individual impacted.
