Local MP Dave MacKenzie agrees that Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau should resign from his post.
WOODSTOCK - Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer is calling for the resignation of the Liberal Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau.
The Tories ramped up the pressure in question period over a brewing controversy. The issues stems over the sale of shares in his families company ahead of tax changes announced in 2015. The Conservatives claim that Morneau unloaded hundreds of thousands of shares in his family's human resources company right before they introduced legislation to raise taxes on the country's highest earners. The announcement caused the stock market to dip and the shares in Morneau's family company would have gone down as well.
Local MP Dave MacKenzie supports his parties decision to call for Morneau's resignation.
"We have laid out the reasons why Mr. Morneau should resign or be replaced in that position. The issues go back to the 680,000 shares that he sold before he brought in that legislation but we also have issues with Bill C-27, the pension legislation that would stand to benefit the Morneau Shepell company. When you look at it from a bigger picture, I know that most people in my mind would think that there is a terrible, terrible conflict."
He says the decision will ultimately be up to the Liberals.
"The Liberals have a large majority, so the call will be up to them, so if he refuses to resign or the Prime Minister refuses to remove him from that position, I think we just keep on the same vain, and see if the public sentiment is there to decide if it's not worth having him there."
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has once again come to Morneau's defence saying he has his full confidence. Morneau has called the allegations absurd and has threatened legal action against his political rivals.
