BROWNSVILLE - The fire bell from the old Brownsville school is now on display at the Brownsville Fire Hall.
The elementary school was demolished about 50 years ago. Mayor David Mayberry says the Hawkins family decided to donate the bell to the Township in order to preserve a small piece of local history.
"The bell was actually retrieved by Mr. Hawkins while he was demolishing the school. He put it on a plaque and kept it in his home for a number of years. Since he passed away and the property has been sold, his family decided that the bell should go back to the community."
Mayberry presented the bell to Fire Chief Rob Serson during the Township Council meeting on July 13th.
"We're please to see that people, even as they move away from the community, recognize the history of the community and want to preserve that and want to remind people of where we come from."
The Brownsville school used to be located on Culloden Line, where the Brownsville Community Centre currently stands.
