Prescription Drug Drop

Community urged to drop-off all expired and potentially harmful prescription drugs they have in their homes.

WOODSTOCK -- If you have unused or expired prescription medications in your home, Woodstock Police want you to know about the second annual Prescription Drop-Off.

The second annual prescription drop-off happens May 10th at the Staples Parking lot on Norwich Ave from 9am-to-1pm.

Constable Steve McEwen with Woodstock Police says there are a number of reasons why your unused or expired medications should be removed from your home.

"We did it last year for the first time, and we thought were pretty successful and we're hoping to beat whatever we did last year and just have more unused, expired or unwanted medications in people's homes that they need to get rid of."

Cst. McEwen says there are a number of reasons why your unused or expired medications should be removed from your home.

"They're targets for break-and-enters, or theft, or maybe it's even people you know in your home who are stealing those unused medications.  If younger children are in the home or visiting your home, they could get into those kinds of medications and it will make them sick."

Cst. McEwen adds if your unused meds are safely secure and there are no children in your home, the drop off still provides an opportunity to simply dispose of prescription drugs properly -- with out harming the environment.

At the same time Oxford Crime Stoppers will be conducting a Spring Clean Up for those looking to shred things like confidential documents in return for a $5.00 donation.  

People can also bring their unwanted electronics to be recycled -- also for a $5.00 donation -- with all proceeds going to Oxford Crime Stoppers.

Woodstock Police Service in partnership with Oxford County Public Health, Ontario Pharmacists Association, the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, Shoppers Drug Mart and Oxford Crime Stoppers, will be participating in the 2014 Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day.
