Preparing Harrington Conservation Area For a Big Celebration

A tireless team is working diligently to prepare the Harrington Conservation Area for Canada's 150th

Plenty of work is being done at the Harrington Conservation Area in Zorra Township as they get set to host a big bash for Canada's 150th anniversary. 

The Zorra celebration will happen on August 12th and work is being done at the conservation to install new washrooms and they are going to dredge the pond. Dredging the pond will return it to its deeper cold water environment and they are going to install a brook trout fishery at the pond. Chair of the Harrington Pond and Park Committee Gavin Houston tells Heart FM volunteers have also been working to restore the mill at the pond for the past 15 years. 

"We have the mill itself which I believe 15 or 16 years ago when the process started, where the Mill which had literally been falling down the embankment towards the Creek was restored by the people through a grant from the Trillium Foundation in 2006. The building was jacked up and a new foundation was put under and then the people themselves redid the outside, put a new roof on it, and refurbished all of the original equipment. It's remarkable the work that has been done and it is at the point now where we can hook it up to the pond. The problem is the old mill raise was a safety hazard and unusable and we are now working with Western University to design a pipe system to take the water from the pond in a safe manner and regenerate our mill and get it operational as it was 140 years ago." 

The goal is to actually have the Mill up and running again in time for the August 12th celebration.
