Ontario Premier Doug Ford says the economy will open with a trickle and he is not going to put an exact date on it. Ford was clarifying remarks made earlier today where it was reported he said the Ontario economy will be open by the May 24 Long Weekend.
ONTARIO - Ontario Premier Doug Ford wanted to clarify remarks he made on a radio station in Ottawa this morning.
Ford was quoted as saying his team is working on a framework to reopen the economy by the Victoria Day Long Weekend while doing an interview on Newstalk 580 "The Morning Rush with Bill Carroll". When asked about that at his daily press briefing, Ford says those quotes are not entirely accurate and he does not have a specific date for when things will start to return back to normal.
"I said everything is conditional on the health and wellbeing of Ontario, conditional on getting the Chief Medical Officer of Health. What I was saying, was can we start opening up a trickle of the economy. I have to be very, very clear, there is never going to be one date that we just open up the economy. We are going to open it up with a trickle and just let it flow from there and constantly measure, but by no means are we going to have, for instance the May 24 weekend, we are just going to open everything up, that is absolutely not going to happen."
Ford was also asked directly if schools will be shut down for the rest of the school year.
"I can't answer that, over the next couple of days, Minister Lecce will be coming out with a statement and it will hopefully give students and teachers and parents some certainty moving forward."
