The Roch Carrier Parent Council will welcome a special guest speaker to discuss stress relief and mindfulness.
WOODSTOCK - Roch Carrier Parent Council will be welcoming a special guest to their council meeting.
Social Worker and Attendance Councillor Alisha Stubbs will talk to parents about how they can help their kids cope with stress at home and in the classroom.
Stubbs will walk parents through multiple stress relief techniques, one of them being the use of affirmations.
"It's just simply putting one finger to the thumb at a time - so pointer, middle, ring, and pinky finger - and just really saying positive things like 'I can do this' or 'I am very loved' or 'I can be calm.' Just some nice quick and easy ways to just kind of regulate the body and make the mind more available to problem solve."
Stubbs will also walk parents through a simple breathing exercise. Breathing in deeply through the nose, holding it for two or three seconds and slowly exhaling from the mouth can deescalate stress from the body and help you feel calmer.
Stubbs believes it's important for kids to practise the techniques at home and in school.
"If kids are seeing strategies, hearing key words, and practising ways to be relaxed and calm at the school level and at home, then I just think that's a really great recipe for them to be effective in all areas of their life."
Roch Carrier parents are welcome to attend Thursday night's Parent Council meeting at 6:30 p.m.
