Police Officers will no longer be investigated by the SIU for administering Naloxone.
WOODSTOCK - The Ontario Government will be assisting police officers across the province in saving lives by amending Regulation 267/10, which enables them to administer Naxolone to suspected opioid overdoses.
OWEN Sound Conservative MPP Bill Walker made the announcement on Tuesday.
"Our government is making these changes to ensure police don't face unfair repercussions when they are doing their job as first responders trying to save lives. This change will help save countless lives while making sure police officers can do their duty without the fear of facing a criminal investigation."
This means the Special Investigations Unit will no longer be able to investigate officers who were attempting to save a life through Naloxone.
Recently a Woodstock Police officer was investigated by the SIU after the officer tried to reverse an overdose in downtown Woodstock last month, and the woman later died in the hospital. The Ontario Association of Police Chiefs was not happy with this investigation as the officer was clearly just trying to help by administering Naloxone.
Naloxone is a medicine that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose (such as fentanyl, oxycodone, and heroin) if used within a short period of time following said overdose. Most of the time, administering the drug is unlikely to cause further harm to the victim.
The previous regulation required that police report to the Special Investigation Unit if an overdose victim died after Naxolone was administered. The SIU is an oversight body, independent of the police, that conducts criminal investigations into circumstances involving police and civilians that have resulted in serious injury or death.
