Police Launch National Safe Driving Campaign

The 'Big Four' issues on our roadways will once again be targeted during Canada Road Safety Week

Just ahead of the long weekend, the OPP are taking part in Canada Road Safety Week.

OPP Constable Stacey Culbert says there can be many different hazards cropping up as the weather gets nicer.

"Especially with the long weekend coming up we're going to be seeing a lot more pedestrian traffic, we're going to be seeing a lot more vehicles on the roadway, hopefully we won't see any more snow, and we'll have some nice weather coming our way. There's going to be a lot more people heading up to their cottages or trailers."

Culbert says this is just another reminder to drivers to respect the responsibility they have whenever they climb behind the wheel.

"Basically the campaign is designed for us to kind of remind drivers that the essential part of our enforcement component is to save lives, reduce injuries, and make sure the public is aware that safe driving practices are a priority."

This is all part of a larger initiative known as Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2025:

"The goal is that we want Canada's roads to be the safest, but we can't do that through enforcement only," Culbert says. "The public has to be educated. We're doing our part to make sure that people have that reminder - the police presence is there and we're trying to keep everybody safe."
