Police Are Giving Tips To Protect Your Home This Holiday Season

Woodstock Police are giving ideas to the public to protect your belongings.

WOODSTOCK - Those looking to head to a sunny destination this holiday season are being reminded to protect your home.

While it is important to close up your house if gone for a week, thieves can strike even just if you making a quick run to the store.  Woodstock Police Constable, Nikki VanLeeuwen, offers ideas so you don't return to an empty home, "There are lots of great tips, one the most important is to not post on social media that you are out of town. Another good idea is to rely on neighbourhood watch if you are not at home and get someone to check on your property, if you have a timer for lights, so it looks like some is living in the residence, or even have people popping by so it looks like someone is living there."  

Constable VanLeeuwen says even if you just run out for a couple of minutes lock up behind you, "Unfortunately there are those people that are criminals and are desperate this time of year, they will wait for an opportunity. If you are just running out for an hour or two to do some shopping it is important that you make time to lock up your residence.  It is suggested that if you have your Christmas tree don't leave them out and don't put them out before the night before."  

"Just the lighting that is important as well and make sure have really good locks on your doors to secure them. Alarm systems are always a great idea as well for that extra safety and security," she says.   

VanLeeuwen added thieves will likely look for quick things to grab like jewelry or purses, so keep your valuables hidden.
