It's an uncertain time for employees at the CAMI plant in Ingersoll.
INGERSOLL - Some sad news out of Ingersoll today.
GM Canada has announced that it will end the production of the BrightDrop electric delivery van. It's built at CAMI and the production will not be moved elsewhere.
Kristian Aquilina, the president and managing director of GM Canada, says the market developed much slower than expected.
"The decision to end production of the BrightDrop electric delivery van is driven by market demand and in no way reflects the commitment and skill of our workforce at CAMI."
She adds production of the vehicle has been suspended since May of this year.
"This continues to be an uncertain time for our workforce at CAMI, and we are committed to working closely with our employees, Unifor and the Canadian and Ontario governments as we evaluate next steps for the future of CAMI."
There were about 1,200 unionized employees at the plant when production was suspended.
The automaker says will work alongside Unifor to follow the provisions of the collective agreement, with hourly employees will receiving six months of salary. There's also the potential for lump sum payments and other benefits.
We have reached out to Mike Van Boekel, the Plant Chair for Unifor Local 88 at CAMI, for comment.
