Plastic Labelling Proposal Approved by County Council

The goal is to improve public participation and help everyone get a better idea of what belongs in recycle bins and what doesn't.

OXFORD - County staff have replied to the federal proposal for plastics reporting and labelling with adoption and approval.

The plan would prohibit the use of the chasing-arrows symbol on plastic products unless at least 80% of the content is recyclable in Canada and used in end products. Also, the proposed federal registry would be used to gather data on the handling of plastics throughout the recycling process to identify areas for improvement.

Suggestions such as an “other” category for the registry for items like plastic toys and hangers, harmonizing the reporting process for plastic producers with what is already in place provincially and a public education program to support recycling are included in the proposal, and a three-year timeline has been set to implement these labelling changes.

Warden Larry Martin explains what the next step looks like.

"So what will happen now is that the motion that was passed by Council to adopt that report will go through to the federal authorities and then they will have the response plus Council's endorsement."

This motion was passed very quickly in a Council meeting that ran for just over 30 minutes.
