A new biofilter is going to be installed at the Pittock Conservation Area by the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority
WOODSTOCK - The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is going to install a biofilter at the Pittock Conservation Area.
It is designed to filter water runoff from upstream agricultural fields before it enters the Thames River. Conservation Services Technician Alison Regehr tells Heart FM why it is so important to install the filter.
"So storm water runoff can carry a variety of pollutants and nutrients with it and those nutrients are great in the soil but we don't want them in our water because that can help contribute to algae growth and other water quality problems, so by using the biofilter we hope to filter out some of those pollutants before the water enters the river and contributing to improved water quality in the Thames River.
She did say that the filter will not really impact the swimming area at Pittock.
"This is such a small scale, it might not directly improve the swimming at Pittock but maybe over the long term as more projects are installed that could help."
It is going to cost $15,000 to install and the funding for the project comes from the Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund through the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) and the RBC Bluewater Fund.
