The cause of the fire, as well as the cost of the damages, are undetermined.
NORWICH - About 30 firefighters were called to the scene of a fire in Norwich over the weekend.
On Saturday around 10 a.m., Norwich Fire & Protective Services responded to a structure fire at a residence on Main Street after neighbours were alerted by smoke alarms.
The cause of the fire is still undetermined, but Director of Fire & Protective Services Derek Van Pagee explained what took place at the scene.
"[Firefighter crews] arrived to a working fire throughout the structure. Initially, they went offensive, but the interior conditions necessitated them to back out. They went defensive after that, confirming that nobody was inside. Crews quickly brought it under control, there were no injuries to people, though some household pets did perish."
The fire took under an hour to extinguish, then crews stuck around for a fire watch for another hour to ensure the situation was controlled. The cost of damages is also unknown at this time.
Van Pagee wanted to remind everyone that working smoke alarms save lives and that it's never too soon to check them.
