PED Confirmed at Oxford Farm

A Farrow-to-Finish Pork farm in Oxford County has been hit with the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea.

A Farrow-to-Finish Pork farm in Oxford County has been hit with the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea.

This is the fourth farm in Oxford to be hit with the PED virus in 2015. The latest case was confirmed on July 8th and the farm in question is believed to be in Norwich Township. PED is a viral disease causing vomiting, Diarrhea and results in a high death loss for pigs.  It is caused by a coronaries. PED has a 100 percent mortality rate in nursing piglets and normally just causes wide spread Diarrhea with a low mortality rate in growing pigs. It is usually contracted from out side sources.

Veterinary Consultant with Ontario Pork Mike Degroote says it will take at least a couple of months for the farm in question to get rid of the virus. " To get rid of the virus over time, the producer working with his veterinarian they need to get the whole herd exposed to the bug and get the whole herd exposed to the bug at the same time, so we have in all the farms that have gotten PED, I think over 60 percent of the farms have eliminated the virus altogether."

The farm in Oxford will now have to undergo bio-security measures and the entire facility will have to cleaned. It can have devastating consequences for the operation. Degroote says the farrow to finish farm in Oxford will have pigs ranging of all ages and will likely experiences losses with the piglets. PED is not a threat to human health and the farm will be allowed to maintain operations while they work to eliminate the virus.
