Pay Equity and a Woman Friendly Budget

The Federal budget from the Liberals is being touted as a woman friendly budget.

WOODSTOCK - The Federal Liberal budget is being touted as a woman friendly budget. 

It calls for pay equity legislation for empoyees in the federal-regulated sectors to help address the wage gap. Executive Director of the Womens Employment Centre in Woodstock Maggie McDonald says the budget is a great start but it's not perfect. 

"There are some things that our missing and to me the one big piece that is missing in child care. Now in the last budget they did set aside money to create new spaces over the next year 5 years and they said of that money, 40,000 new spaces will be created, which seems like a lot until you realize the need across the country is 700,000 spaces. It is has been proven that if you provide good child care spaces, that it in the end pays for itself and the economy is in a better situation. It would have made it at lot easier for women to get into the workplace." 

McDonald says the language in the budget is encouraging when they are talking about pay-equity and getting more women into the workforce. 

"It certainly is nice to be able to feel included, just in the sense of them calling this a woman friendly budget and equatity right on the front of it. Language is important and it is important for those words to be used, so that felt good." 

The government says will consult with unions, employers and other stakeholders to develop the pay-equity legislation, which they say will be included in the budget bill.
