Parking spaces have been removed in Otterville at the turning from Dover Street to Oxford Road 19 to increase safety for all drivers.
OTTERVILLE - You may notice fewer parking spots when travelling along Oxford Road 19 through the village of Otterville.
County Council endorsed the decision to remove parking spots to give residents turning onto 19 from Dover Street a clearer view of traffic. Warden of Oxford County, David Mayberry, spoke with Heart FM on why the change to parking on the main street needed to happen: "There has been problems at that intersection before - there was a fatality almost 2 years ago. In reviewing it, the county staff looked at it and realized that the sight lines at the corner needed to be lengthened because of the nature of the intersection. Basically, what they are requiring or requesting is that parking not be allowed as close to the corner to allow greater sight lines."
With the parking spots set to be removed it was Norwich Township Mayor, Larry Martin, who wasn't overly satisfied with the decision from council. "The original report recommended they take four out east and west and council, after consultation, thought that possibly 3 would have been sufficient. We had an opportunity to talk in between with council and they more or less supported it. I wasn't in total support of the recommendation but it was something that we could live with."
Warden Mayberry is hoping that this will eliminate the threat of collisions at the intersection. "Norwich Council had looked at it and said it seemed like a lot of parking places missing but if that is what is going to make it the safest for the community in the long run maybe that is what we better do. "
