Unifor Local 88 has asked for Oxford County's written support for the local auto industry in the wake of the TPP agreement.
Oxford County has agreed to show their support to the local auto industry who is worried about potential job losses after the Trans Pacific Trade Partnership.
The London Region which includes Oxford County is responsible for 22 percent of the cars manufactured in Canada and it employs over 13,900 people locally. President of Unifor Local 88 Dan Borthwick says they are worried the TPP could a 25 percent loss in the need for assembly and parts production.
"We still haven't seen the actual document yet, however all of the reports we are getting suggest that we will see a significant reduction in the supply management rules for assembly and parts, they go from 62.5 percent to 45 percent for assembly and from 60 percent to 40 percent for with parts manufacturers."
Oxford County has agreed to have the Warden write a letter to the Prime Minister, Premier of Ontario, and our local MP and MPP regarding Oxford's interest in sustaining and growing the local automobile assembly and supporting manufacturing industries with specific regard for a future of considerable and transformational change in the automobile sector. The motion also states Oxford will work with the appropriate parties to establish an automobile industry growth strategy for Oxford County.
Borthwick says they were happy to see the County show their support.
"I believe the County recognizes the importance of the industry and are willing to partner to maintain our current industry and also develop an ongoing strategy that would see the industry grow in the County of Oxford, which we greatly appreciate."
