Oxford Endorses Natural Heritage Study

Oxford County Council has endorsed a Natural Heritage Study and will send it to the lower tier municipalities for their input.

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Council has endorsed a Natural Heritage Study for the county. The study helps determine which environmental features in the county should be preserved, protected or enhanced.

Warden David Mayberry says the report may cause problems when it comes to the needs of the public versus the rights of the private.

"We know that we want to have a good and healthy environment which probably means we need to have a higher level of tree coverage for everything, versus the rights of the individual who owns the property and they say well I'd like more forest cover but I would prefer it be on the neighbours land than on mine."

Problems may also arise when it comes to selling public lands for development.

Mayberry says they want the public's input.

"Council asked that the report be sent out to the public and the lower tier municipalities and have them provide comment so when we get into the more fulsome debate on it, that will influence how council is reading it."
