Oxford County Forges Ahead In Shelter Plan

Oxford County Council is updating the province on the progression of the 10 year shelter plan including a partnership with CMHA.

OXFORD COUNTY - County Council has discussed their recent progress on creating more affordable housing in Oxford. 

Warden David Mayberry says since the 10 year shelter plan's inception in 2011 council must update the province with the progress each year.

"This is really kind of a report to the province saying we have set our objectives and we have met all of our objectives as we have went along. Are we where we want to be? No we are not, but we kind of determined a goal and we have sort of fulfilled that goal for this year. Next year we will have some more goals and we will try to fulfill them as well."

Over the past year three projects have been approved to support 52 affordable housing units in Woodstock, Tavistock and Innerkip.

Mayberry adds they also have a partnership with CMHA Oxford.

"We know that in some cases it's advisable to have someone readily available to people for consulting and for engaging with to make sure that the challenges they are facing at that particular moment in their life can be addressed. We want to work in partnership with whatever partners we need in the county and this happens to be one example."

Mayberry explains how much money has been spent so far.

"We provided not only provincial and federal money, but about $1.2 million of county taxpayer money to supplement what the province and feds were contributing. I think they were somewhere over $2 million, we wanted to make sure that we were giving our share to the project as well."
