Oxford County council renewed the charges, which comes up for renewal every five years. The County-wide services include roads, general government, water and wastewater.
OXFORD COUNTY - The development charges study was recently renewed by Oxford County Council.
The Development Charges Background study is renewed every five years and looks at different County-wide services.
Warden Larry Martin says there are different services included in the study, some of which may see some changes.
"It's more or less looking at some of the changes that are coming forward and what we're doing. Right now I know hard services are going to stay but some of the soft services will be pulled out, so like roads, bridges, culverts, piping that's still in but libraries, fire service that will may be pulled out down the road. There's another mechanism possibly put in place where we can factor that into that instead of the development charges."
Warden Martin explains how this will impact the County.
"It will give us an opportunity to maintain and plan down the road what is going to be required to maintain the infrastructure that's there and the necessities of development. There's a substantial amount of money raised each year, and hopefully the developers help pay for the development."
In addition to being beneficial to the County in the future, Warden Martin adds that the development charges helps look after their asset management.
He says they held a couple public meetings before the charges were renewed.
The new development charges will be available to the public in July. The charges can be viewed on the County's website.
