The under 14 Major Bantam Girls team won gold this weekend in Hamilton.
The Oxford Attack Under-14 Major Bantam Girls team won their 3rd consecutive gold medal in the annual Blessed Sacrament sanctioned O.B.A basketball ‘AA’ tournament in Hamilton over the weekend.
The Attack played a thrilling finale against their pool nemesis, the Brockville Badgers, by employing a stifling man to man defense against the extremely tall Badgers to win a tight 27-24 contest.
The girls opened pool play against the St. Catherine’s Running Rebels and relied on their defense to shut down the Rebels and cruised to a 43-20 victory.
The Attack then played the Kingston Impact and could not find their offensive rhythm until late in the game to seal a sloppy, yet hard fought 30-21 win.
Next up for the girls the Brockville Panthers that boasted two strong six feet tall players whose inside post game was a challenge for the Attack. The Attack used their full court pressure defense, boxed out their taller opponent and employed their 3-2 zone to hold off the Badgers 36-30 to keep their unbeaten pool record intact.
The Attack girls completed pool play with a hotly contested battle versus the Pelham Panthers. The Panthers overcame the Attack full court pressure defense and gave the Attack all they could handle from start to finish. The Attack eked out a narrow 32-28 victory to send them to the gold medal game.
The Attack U-14 girls win in Division 3 out of 6 at Blessed Sacrament will place them in Division 3 (out of 10) and a top 25 ranking at their OBA Provincial Championships in Brampton in two weeks.
