Over Half of All Adults in Ontario Have Received First Vaccination

Health Minister Christine Elliott says over 50 percent of all adults in Ontario have received their first COVID-19 vaccine.

Since the start of May, over a million shots have been put into arms in Ontario, and the province is on track to have administered first doses to 65 percent of Ontario adults 18 and older by the end of the month. 

Elliott says the vaccine rollout is ramping up, and the priority is to give shots to those most at risk. 

"With an increased supply of vaccines, we continue to make it easier than ever to receive a vaccine in hot spot areas to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and protect our hospital capacity."

Over the past two weeks, the province has given half of it's vaccine supply to designated hot spots, and 54 percent of adults in those areas have received their first shot. 

The Health Minister also addressed the recent decision by the Chief Medical Officer of Health to pause first doses of the AstraZeneca shot. 

Elliott says there is a small number of AstraZeneca doses are on hand, and the province is set to receive another 250,000 doses next week. 

However, the province is shelving those doses as officials await direction on the vaccine from Health Canada and the National Advisory Committee on Immunizations. 

First doses of the vaccine have been paused due to concerns about blood clots. 

Elliott notes a study from the U.K. suggests a reduced risk of blood clots in second AstraZeneca doses.
