OPP Warning Residents About Lottery Scam

Police are warning the public to be cautious about lottery scams popping up in the area.

The OPP are warning the public about a lottery scam making the rounds in the region.

Police are warning residents to be mindful of telemarketers or mail flyers telling you that you have won a lottery you didn't enter. In most cases you are told that you need to send some money to cover the taxes for your winnings and then they will send you the cash.

A few cases have occurred locally where people have fallen victim to this scam and police are worried their could be more cases out there. A lot of times victims never come forward because they get embarrassed.

Here are a few tips to help recognize a scam.

- If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
- You must pay first before receiving anything.
- You must provide your private financial information.
- Often they only accept cash, rather than a cheque or credit card
- It is a limited opportunity and you're going to miss out.

If you suspect you may be a target, or have already sent funds, be assured you are not alone.
