OPP are warning the public about a Western Union scam after a local senior almost fell victim.
NORFOLK COUNTY - A senior citizen from Norfolk County was almost out $600 after falling victim to what is known as the Western Union Scam.
Police say the senior received a call on Monday from a man with a heavy accent. He told the victim that he worked for Western Union and someone had gained access to their account. Several security questions were then asked, which also included banking card numbers in order to find the source of the withdrawals. The first four numbers of the banking card were provided at which time the remaining numbers were given by the victim.
The scammer then asked for remote access to the victims computer. The senior became suspicious and attempted to close the windows and cancel the remote access with no results.
The computer was immediately unplugged at which time the victim contacted their financial institution. It was discovered that approximately $600 was charged to the victim's credit card however was subsequently reimbursed.
Police are urging everyone to hang up the phone if you should receive such a call. It's a SCAM.
Computer users are reminded, that unless you initiate the call, do not allow anyone access to your computer. Don't give out personal, banking or credit card information to anyone unless you are sure of whom you are dealing with. Change your passwords frequently as well.
