All Labour Day weekend officers will be out in full force ready to implement the new driving rules.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford OPP will be out in full force this long weekend as they hope to keep everyone safe on the roads this long weekend.
One thing they will really be targeting this weekend in distracted driving and people talking or texting on their cell phones. Already this year 41 deaths in Ontario can be attributed to distracted driving. Sergeant Dave Rektor tells Heart FM that driving distracted can be just as dangerous as driving impaired.
"Well people have this misconception that they can text and drive, I want to be very clear and frank, they can't, the statistics have shown that they can't, scientific tests have shown that they can't do it safely and if that is not enough proof, then come and ride with us for a few days and we will show you what texting and driving really looks like. People are dying on our roadways as a result of people that are distracted, either by cell phone technology or other gadgets in their car or fussing with other things in the vehicle like children and pets, drivers need to know that it's time to stop."
Rektor notes the new laws are in place where a minimum fine is $490 and 3 demerit points and in some cases that fine can be increased to $1,000. Police will also be looking for impaired drivers, speeders and those not wearing their seat belts this weekend.
