OPP Say Canada Revenue Agency Scam Still Active

OPP officers across the province are still receiving reports of fraudsters pretending to be with the Canada Revenue Agency.

While tax season is behind us, one thing that is still going on is what is known as the Canada Revenue Agency Scam. Every day the OPP receives a complaint from the public about the CRA scam.

How it works is criminals will try to extort money from you over the phone, mail, text or email and claim they are working for the CRA. They ask for personal information like a social insurance number, credit card number or your bank account information.

Hundreds of people in Ontario have fallen victim to this scam and the sophistication of the fraudsters is quite staggering. In some cases when they call it may even say CRA on the caller ID. In other cases victims are directed to a fake CRA website where they are told to input their information.

Here are some other signs that the person calling you may be a fraudster:

- They may seem urgent on the phone, which could lead to victims not taking the time to verify the authenticity of the call.

- They will use fear to their advantage. They may threaten you if you do not pay whatever debt they have told you about.

- They will also request a money transfer through Money Gram, Western Union and maybe even your own bank.

Police are once again reminding the public to never give out your personal information, especially over the phone. The CRA will never call you like this demanding money.

If you believe you have fallen victim to a scam like this be sure to inform the police. You can also file a complaint through the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre.
