OXFORD COUNTY - With temperatures expected to hover between the low to mid 20's this long weekend many people in Oxford County will likely be enjoying the long weekend on the water.
Oxford OPP wants to put out a few reminders to local residents who may be taking out the boat for the first time this season. Sergeant Dave Rektor says the number one cause of fatalities on the water is because of people not wearing a proper Personal Floatation Device. Last year 20 people died in boating related accidents, 85% of those people were not wearing a PFD. He adds most of the deaths on the water over the past five years were preventable.
Rektor says it is important to have a plan in place on how you can make it home in case of a disaster. Although the warmer weather is here, the water is still very cold, especially if you’re heading towards some of the big lakes this long weekend. Rektor pointed out that it is the driver’s responsibility to keep everyone safe and make sure they are wearing their PFD. You can get an impaired charge on the water and OPP marine unit will be patrolling this long weekend.
