Ontario Opens More Roads for ATVs

You might notice more ATVs and ORVs on Ontario roadways, but that also means there are new rules to follow.

If you plan to go quadding this summer, you might want to double check those rules before you go.

This month, the Ministry of Transportation has changed the rules governing ATV and ORV usage. 

Now two up ATVs, side by side ORVs and utility terrain vehicles can operate on the shoulder of some public roads. But all drivers must wear an approved motorcycle helmet and use a seatbelt or foot rest. Drivers must also register and insure their vehicles. 

OPP Constable Lisa Naranscik says they will be making sure all drivers are aware of the changes."It's making sure that people are wearing their safety gear. They're allowing people to be on the roadways, but when they're on the roadways they must have a license - so they must have a G2 or an M2 driver's license - and the vehicles must be registered and insured."

Children under eight are not allowed as a passenger on any off road vehicle or ATV while it's operating on a roadway.

Naranscik says they will also be talking to other drivers as well: "Making sure that the people that are driving their vehicles know that people could be operating these on the sides of the roads as well so that when they do see them they take care and caution while they're driving."
