The Woodstock fire department is offering up a few tips to make sure you fire proof your Christmas tree this year.
WOODSTOCK - The Christmas season is in full swing in Oxford County and a lot of people have already gotten their tree.
The Woodstock Fire Department wants to think about fire safety when you find the right spot to place the tree in your home. Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods offers this advice when selecting a real tree this year.
"You want to choose a fresh tree with green needles that don't fall off when you touch them and before placing it into a stand cut 2 inches from the base of the trunk and make sure it is at least 3 feet away from any heat source like fire places, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights."
Woods says you also need to water the tree on a regular basis because it can become a fire hazard when it gets really dry.
