It was a celebration, awards ceremony and fundraiser all rolled into one night.
EMBRO -- The Oxford District Women's Institute took the time to celebrate women and recognize two local high school students last weekend.
The inaugural Oxford Celebrates Women at the Embro Community Centre featured a dinner, guest motivational-speaker Susan Stewart and music, while introducing their scholarship recipients for 2014, Emily Van Bommel and Lidia Schryver.
President Anne Innes says their purpose for holding the event was two-fold. "We wanted to bring them together on Mother's Day weekend, it turned out very exciting we had mother and daughter teams and we had, sometimes, even three generational teams that came. And the second fold was we've been running this scholarship now for a number of years and we needed to raise the base of that to continue to do it. We felt that the scholarships very important part of what we wanted to do as an organization."
The ODWI have been awarding the scholarships to high school students since 1953 to assist with their post-secondary education.
Federation Women's Institutes of Ontario has been in existence over 115 years and in Oxford County alone has 10 branches.
Innes welcomes any women interested in learning more about the Oxford District Women's Institute to visit www.fwio.on.ca. "We envision an Oxford County where women work together for safe and healthy communities and they pursue a enriched and balance lifestyle. We just want to engage the women of today and our organization is broad, we want to create education yet we get together and have fun as well."
