The Oxford County Injury Prevention Team was formed in 1996, in order to inform the public about certain safety measures to prevent injury.
OXFORD COUNTY - It has been 20 years since the Oxford County Injury Prevention team formed. Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen with the Woodstock Police Services says there are lots of organizations involved with the team.
"Basically it's every community partner that has a mandate in regards to injury prevention, so we work together on projects all over the county."
Here's a list of all of the organizations currently involved with the team:
- Canadian Red Cross.
- Community volunteers.
- Ontario Federation of ATV Clubs.
- Ontario Ministry of Transportation.
- Oxford County OPP.
- Oxford County Public Health and Emergency Services.
- Woodstock and Area Community Health Centre.
- Woodstock Fire Service.
- Woodstock Police Service.
- Young Drivers of Canada
Lorna Boratto is one of the founding members of the team; she tells Heart FM why the team was formed in 1996.
"Prevention of injury was never a part of the public health lexicon so to speak, but it started to trickle in and say hey, this is a huge number of people who are being severely injured and dying due to preventable injuries."
So the team has been working on lots of projects over the years in order to help raise safety awareness for lots of activities. Some of these projects include:
- Motor vehicle safety (seatbelts, car seats, airbags, distracted/impaired driving, etc).
- Bike safety.
- Pedestrian safety.
- ATV safety.
- Water safety (pools, rivers, lakes, etc).
- Rail safety.
- Farm safety.
Injury is the leading cause of death for people under the age of 40.
