Norwich Township Receives Federal Grant for Community Centre Roof Replacement

Crews will get to work installing a new roof for the Norwich Community Centre in about 8 to 10 weeks and the entire project should cost about $1.1-million.

NORWICH - A new roof will be installed at the Norwich Community Centre this year.

The current roof has been leaking over the past few years, so a replacement project will get underway in about 8 to 10 weeks. The work should be completed by mid-October and there should be no interruptions to Community Centre programming.

Director of Community Services Patrick Hovorka says it will be an expensive project, but the Township has received a federal grant to help make it happen.

"The estimated cost of the entire project will be about $1.1-million and we are receiving $330,000 through the Community, Culture and Recreation Infrastructure stream. So we're very happy to have that happen for us."

Hovorka says the Community Centre underwent a major renovation project about 15-years ago which cost about $5-million total, but unfortunately the roof didn't age very well.

"The roof was one of those items that has accelerated and for whatever reason it has been a bit of a mechanical failure. But we've got enough money in the reserves and the infrastructure grant that we got through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program has definitely give us a shot in the arm to accelerate this project."

Hovorka says the new roof should last about 30 or 40-years.
