Bill 5, also known as the Stopping Harassment and Abuse by Local Leaders Act, looks to create a policy where a member of municipal council could be removed from office for workplace violence or harassment.
NORWICH TOWNSHIP - Norwich Township Council has decided to support Bill 5, also known as the Stopping Harassment and Abuse by Local Leaders Act.
Ward 2 Councillor Alisha Stubbs brought the motion forward during last night's meeting.
"It actually amends various statutes in respect to workplace violence and harassment policies so there is a Code of Conduct for councillors and members of local boards."
She explains why council voted unanimously in favour.
"Currently for Ontario, the harshest penalty that can be imposed on a councillor is suspension and loss of pay for only 90 days, even in cases that involve workplace harassment. There is no process currently in place to remove a municipal councillor from office for those actions."
Bill 5 looks to create a process where a member of municipal council could be removed from office for workplace violence or harassment.
Stubbs says it will have its second reading in May and close to 20 municipal councils across Ontario have passed motions of support including Woodstock, London and Kincardine.
