Those who want to run for the Ward 1 council seat in Norwich Township can now pick up a nomination package at the Township office.
NORWICH TOWNSHIP - Nominations are now open for the Ward 1 byelection in Norwich Township.
Those who are interested in running for the council seat can now pick up a nomination package from the Township office, but CAO Lee Robinson recommends booking an appointment with the Clerk's office beforehand.
"The Clerk will go through the package with them to tell them all of the different steps that they need to do. Once the nomination package is completed, they need to turn it back in to the Township between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. no later than March 22nd."
You can contact Kim Armstrong, the Clerk and the Director of Corporate Services, by calling 519-667-2000 with extension 7614.
Robinson says the nomination package includes all of the necessary information you need, including the eligibility requirements.
"They need to be a Canadian citizen, at least 18-years-old, they need to be a resident of Norwich Township or a non-resident owner or tenant of land in Norwich Township or a spouse, and they can't be legally prohibited."
This means you don't have to live or own land in Ward 1 specifically to run, just the Township in general. Ward 1 covers the southern portion of the Township, including the communities of Otterville and Springford.
The byelection is scheduled for Monday May 6th. John Scholten, the previous Ward 1 Councillor, retired at the end of 2023.
