New Sexual Education Course Explained

Don Macpherson from Thames Valley discusses the new Sexual Education Curriculum to begin in September

September 2nd will launch a new curriculum at public schools that was announced yesterday to deal with health and physical education.  It will have been the first time since 1998 that the course has been revamped and one of the biggest changes will be to teach young students how to stay safe on the Internet specially dealing with social media. Don Macpherson Superintendent of Student Achievement for Thames Valley District School Board explains. "Very young kids are using these media platforms with some regularity and there has been some significant changes in terms of technology and terms of accessibility to each other through social media which certainly has prompted some significant changes."  

Macpherson also goes on to break down the new program and thinks it is a perfect time for a change."It is a very comprehensive curriculum it's K-12 it involves healthy active living, nutrition, substance use and abuse, it involves healthy decision making and the sexuality component of this curriculum is really only 10% of the total curriculum."  

Macpherson encourages any parents to contact their child's principal for more information regarding the new curriculum and that parents can follow along at home with what their kids are learning.  "In September the Ministry is releasing parent guides grade by grade so there will be a guide for mom's and dad's and who have children in grade one.  They can look at what is in the health curriculum what can I find and it is all there then are able to say okay maybe I want to have a conversation with the principal or my son and or daughters teacher." This will include all public schools province wide.
