Turbine blades for a new wind power project on Lake Ontario will come from Tillsonburg. The upcoming Siemens wind turbine blade plant has signed on to supply a 300-megawatt offshore project on Lake Ontario. They'll be supplying the blades for 130 turbines to Windstream Wolfe Island Shoals...assuming the project goes ahead as planned. As Siemens Canada VP of Energy Bill Smith explains, the project is part of a provincial moratorium. "You have to understand there's a moritorium on offshore, so certainly as clarity emerges around this project, we're happy to be suppliers to Windstream." Smith says if the project goes ahead as planned, it will create a year worth of production at the Tillsonburg plant, among others. Windstream says in selecting Siemens to supply the turbines, the project will contain over 50 per cent Ontario content. The project will be located off the southwest shore of Wolfe Island, in eastern Lake Ontario.
