Big Brothers-Sisters SOAR Program gives those on wait list free opportunities.
WOODSTOCK -- Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Woodstock and District is looking for different activities to help children realize their full potential through a wide variety of mentoring relationships and opportunities.
One of those opportunities sees the local agency partnering with the Woodstock Taekwondo Club to give youth on the local waiting list free lessons.
James Rijneveld, Group Program and Volunteer Coordinator with Big Brothers and Big Sisters says Woodstock Taekwondo head instructor Chad Parker is offering the lessons at no cost as part of Big Brothers and Big Sisters Social Opportunities And Relationships (SOAR) program.
"Chad is helping us with our SOAR program, these kids are on a waiting list to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister. He's helping these kids by providing a new perspective of discipline and confidence by teaching Taekwondo but also learning discipline from a teacher's perspective. Many of these kids wouldn't normally get the chance to get that perspective on learning, leadership and confidence."
He adds the "SOAR" program is always on the lookout for new activities for kids on the wait list to take part in locally.
"We take them skating, horseback riding; we're even looking into lawn-bowling, badminton -- a lot of different programs depending on the kid and depending on what we can set up with local businesses or local organizations in town to help us out with finding some new opportunities for these kids."
Rijneveld says Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Woodstock and District are still looking for many volunteers to come forward to help make matches with youth in need of a mentor. Anyone interested in becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister should contact the local office at (519) 537-6404 or visit them online at: www.bbbswoodstock.ca
