Justin Trudeau speaks up about national school food program ahead of the federal budget meeting.
OTTAWA - The Federal government is committing to the creation of a national school food program amid rising grocery prices.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement today, that their upcoming federal budget meeting will include a discussion of the food program for schools in Canada.
The launch of the national school food program is expected to provide healthy meals to an additional 400,000 children a year. Over the next 5 years, Ottawa plans to spend around $1 billion on the national food program.
This has been a long-promised launch that the Liberal government had promised when Trudeau campaigned for it during the 2021 election. According to the Breakfast Club of Canada, the country is the only G7 country that does now have a national school food program.
Trudeau said in a statement that because of the rising costs, it would take pressure off of parents.
''This will take pressure off of families, invest directly in the future of our kids, and make sure they’re able to reach their full potential – feeling healthy and happy.''
While the New Democrats have been pushing for the Liberals to fulfill this promise, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh referred to the program as a demand, also saying last month in a social media post.
''Parents are doing everything they can to take care of their kids, but the cost of food keeps going up.''
The federal budget meeting is planned for ahead two weeks from now, on April 16t
