Southwestern Public Health is asking moms in Oxford County to share their favourite breastfeeding tip or success story as they celebrate National Breastfeeding week.
OXFORD COUNTY - It's National Breastfeeding week.
Southwestern Public Health, which includes Oxford County is recognizing the week with a contest. They are challenging moms to share their stories online through social media. Breastfeeding is promoted as the natural way of feeding babies by the Canadian Pediatric Society, the World Health Organization and Health Canada – but that doesn’t mean the experience is naturally perfect for many moms.
Public Health Nurse and lactation consultant Jennifer Wyscaver says it is common for moms to feel overwhelmed, confused or worried about feeding their babies.
“It is so common to have questions and concerns, to worry and to feel overwhelmed. Breastfeeding is a learned behaviour for both the Mom and the baby. On social media accounts we’re flooded with idyllic images of breastfeeding that don’t reflect our own real-life experiences. This can lead to moms judging themselves or feeling ashamed for needing help. I’m here to tell Moms that their experiences are normal and we’re hear to help them through it.”
The contest calls on moms to share their favourite breastfeeding tip or success story. Contest details will be announced on Tuesday, the first official day of National Breastfeeding Week on the Southwestern Public Health Facebook Page which you can find online here.
