Mayor Birtch attempts to add another $900,000 to the Police Service building addition budget for the creation of a third floor.
WOODSTOCK - A late motion to tack on an additional $900,000 to the Woodstock Police Service building addition budget for the creation of a third floor was defeated by Woodstock City Council.
Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch who sits on the Woodstock Police Services Board put forth the motion for the additional funding that would have pushed the budget for the police addition to over $6 million.
Woodstock Chief Administrative Officer David Creery said the money was only a rough estimate of what it would actually cost to create a third floor shell and didn't include the cost of finishing the space, "that is just a very rough estimate of creating essentially a large shell space."
City Councillors split the vote 3 to 3 resulting in a defeat of the motion. Woodstock County/City councillor Deborah Tait emphasized that the $900,000 was not an accurate number of the true cost of creating a third level.
Mayor Trevor Birtch said the motion came about from a conversation he had at a Police Services Board meeting, "with the new chief a simple question was asked will this provide for tomorrow?...within that building envelope they can get by today, they can't do everything they want to do today and it won't provide for tomorrow."
The 2015 capital budget was approved by council and as a result the original Woodstock Police building addition plan will continue.
